(Safe Abortion Theme Lead, CommonHealth)
Dr. Alka Barua is a public health consultant with M.D in Paediatrics and PhD in Sociology. She has 30 years of experience in public health. After practicing paediatrics for three years, she worked for Foundation for Research in Health Systems, a non-government research organisation, for close to two decades. After being Executive Director for 14 years, she quit the organisation to complete her Ph.D. in Sociology from Tata Institute of Social Sciences on the topic “Public Private Partnerships and Women’s Reproductive Health: Three Case Studies from Gujarat’. Since 2010, she has worked as an independent consultant. She is a member of “CommonHealth” a rights-based, multi-state coalition of more than 300 organization and individuals that advocates for increased access to sexual and reproductive health care and services to improve health conditions of women and marginalized communities.
Since last two years she leads the Safe Abortion Theme of CommonHealth. Her core skills include health system research, training and capacity building and monitoring and evaluation of programmes. As a researcher she has been involved in formative and implementation research in the health sector, particularly in the area of reproductive and child health, safe abortion, adolescent health, primary health care and nutrition in various states of India.
She has presented papers at national and international seminars, workshops and conferences and has published papers in both national and international journals.
She has provided consultancy services to national and international organizations including the World Health Organisation, United Nations Foundation, Population Council, EngenderHealth, Ford Foundation, GTZ, International Centre for Research on Women, OXFAM GB, Rockefeller foundation, UNFPA and The World Bank. She has also provided consultancy to the national as well as State governments in India.
Dr. Altaf Hossain
(Executive Director in Association for prevention of Septic Abortion, Bangladesh (BAPSA)
Dr. Hossain educated in erstwhile Soviet Union and started his carrier in 1986 as a researcher and for a short time joined the government job, leaving the job in 1988 fully devoted his carrier in research and program and organizational development. He is currently serving as an Executive Director in Association for prevention of Septic Abortion, Bangladesh (BAPSA) which was founded in 1982. He is serving in this organization since December, 1990. Dr. Altaf has immense experience in program /project management in the areas of health, family planning, unsafe abortion and Menstrual Regulation and also other components of reproductive health. Have exposure in establishing public private partnership health project in urban areas.
Dr. Hossain also known as researcher in the field of SRHR issues –especially in abortion and unsafe abortion, menstrual regulation and other issues of reproductive health. He has research affiliation with Guttmacher Institute-a New-York based reproductive health research think-tank and University of San Francisco, California. Participated and presented papers in international seminars on unsafe abortions related issues in several occasions. Has publications related to reproductive health in International Journals: International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health and others. He was a fellow of Bixby-fellowship at Guttmacher Institute in 2012 and also a Ford fellow of 2016. He maintains relationship with the Government and different net-works: the NIRAPOD and Unite for Body Rights Alliance NEARS- all are promoting SRHR in the country. Dr. Hossain is affiliated with NGOs like- Nagorik Udoyg-a human right based organizations and Association for Social Development.
Dr. Sundari Ravindran
(Honorary Professor, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum)
Dr. Sundari Ravindran holds a Ph.D. in Applied Economics and served for twenty years as Professor of Public Health in the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum. She is a Visiting Faculty at the School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Sundari is a member of the governing board of the National Health Systems Resource Centre, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. She was a co-editor of Reproductive Health Matters (now Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters) and is currently a member of its editorial advisory board. She has worked with the World Health Organisation in its headquarters and regional offices in various capacities. She was also a member of the United Nations’ MDG Task Force on Maternal and Child Health, and of the Foundation Council of the Global Forum for Health Research. Sundari is a founder-member of CommonHealth, a national Coalition for Reproductive Health and Safe Abortion in India. She is also a founder-member of Rural Women’s Social Education Centre (RUWSEC), a grassroots women’s health organization in Tamil Nadu, and has been involved in the organisation’s activities in various capacities since its inception in 1981 till present
Fara Rom
(Program Officer, ARROW)
Fara started her journey as a volunteer in the field of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in 2016 and found her passion by doing outreach work for Negeri Sembilan Family Planning Association (NSFPA) while she was studying. She continued her involvement in Sexual Reproductive Health by actively volunteering for Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Family Reproductive Health Association (SWP FReHA) and the Federation of Reproductive Health Association Malaysia (FRHAM) and was trained as a peer educator in 2017. She engages in different human rights issues too as she believes the issues of SRHR intersects with other pressing issues like child rights, refugee rights and poverty. She started a platform called For Youth Initiative Kuala Lumpur (FYIKL) which focuses on online SRHR advocacy.
Mageda Esolyo
(Regional Communication and Campaign Officer, WGNRR Africa)
Mageda is psychologist by profession, impassioned by women and girl’s health in particular SRHR, development and equality in the society. She works at WGNRR as the regional communication and campaign officer for Africa programming and supporting in global advocacy.
Mageda has previously provided counselling to survivors of gender-based violence in Kenya through hotline 1195 Managed mobile health technology that give out information on sexual and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa, helped set up and capacity strengthen hotlines in Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria and Rwanda that ensure girls and women can access unbiased sexual and reproductive health information, and led teams on key communication campaigns in Kenya for advocacy on comprehensive sexual and reproductive rights.
She has been involved in National and regional advocacy campaigns at the African commission of Human and people’s rights, the African SDG forum and using the UN mechanisms with through research-based advocacy. She believes that we are more alike than we are different and Art and expression are important in all faucets of life. During her free time, you’ll find her practicing Yoga.
Marevic Parcon
(Executive Director, WGNRR)
Marevic is an activist for over two decades. She has implemented programmes on women’s rights, sustainable, socially just, democratic and accountable multilateral trading system, grassroots mobilization, Southern-led north-south collaboration on aid reform, among others. Marevic is currently the Executive Director at Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), a southern-based global network that strengthens movements for the promotion and advancement of sexual & reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and justice. Marevic led the implementation of the Safe Abortion Advocacy Project that enhanced the capacity of grassroots organisations to undertake safe abortion advocacy and established national networks to address abortion stigma at multiple levels. She also led the linking learning platform for safe abortion advocates from DRC, Indonesia, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Nepal, Malaysia, Netherlands Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Peru, Tanzania and Uganda. In 2015, Marevic initiated and now coordinates the Philippine Safe Abortion Advocacy Network (PINSAN). Marevic also served the Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health Rights (APCRSHR) as a member of the International Steering Committee (Vietnam, 2017); the International Network for the Reduction of Abortion Discrimination and Stigma (inroads) as a global steering committee member (2017-2018); the Asia Pacific CSO Forum on Beijing+20 as a member of the organizing committee; and she is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRDIC)
Mirembe Nayiga Mariam
Community Health Rights Network (COHERINET)
Mariam works with Community Health Rights Network (COHERINET), as the Community Engagements and Outreach Manager. In 2011, she served as a member of the Board of Directors of Empowered at Dusk Women’s Association- an organization that works to advocate for sex workers rights. She is pursuing my degree in public health; as a devoted women activist and advocate, am enshrined in ensuring the need for addressing the political, economic and social factors that hinder ensuring abortion as a realized health human rights issue and woman’s choice. Ensuring availability and accessibility to decentralized quality cost effective friendly comprehensive abortion care services for vulnerable women of reproductive age especially at the community grass roots levels in Uganda has been and still part of my work for the last 6 years.
Payal Shah
(Consultant on Gender, Health, Human Rights & Advocacy)
Payal is a human rights lawyer with 15+ years’ experience developing strategies and partnerships connecting international, regional, and national advocacy to effectively shape and implement human rights norms and remove legal/policy barriers relating to gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights.
Significant expertise in designing strategic litigation and advocacy campaigns (including implementation of decisions); conducting U.N. advocacy including through treaty bodies and special procedures; developing coalition- and movement-building initiatives; and facilitating capacity building of advocates, judges, NHRIs, and other government stakeholders
Payal worked with CRR as Acting Regional Director, Asia Program, her work at the Centre included litigation and advocacy in India, Nepal, and the Philippines around issues of abortion, maternal mortality and morbidity, and access to contraception information and services. She plays a leading role in the South Asia Reproductive Justice and Accountability Initiative that aims to develop further litigation and build legal capacity throughout the region. She co-authored Forsaken Lives: The Harmful Impact of the Philippine Criminal Abortion Ban and was a key contributor to Maternal Mortality in India: Using Constitutional and International Law to Promote Accountability and Reform before co-authoring its update in 2011.
Samia Afrin
(Project Director, Naripokkho)
Samia Afrin, presently working as Project Director for Sexual health and Reproductive Rights (SRHR) project of Naripokkho and working since 1997. She also member of Naripokkho. She is working with local NGOs and conducting trainings, workshops, seminars and coordinating among National, Regional and International organizations. She also involved in policy advocacy on women’s sexual reproductive health and rights. Currently she is conducting the project named “Claiming the right to safe abortion: Strategic Partnership in Asia”. She has also responsible in a project named “Right Here Right Now (RHRN)” as Project Coordinator (honorary) funded by Rutgers (Netherlands) and ARROW (Malaysia). Her major responsibilities are policy advocacy with relevant Ministries and other stakeholders both in national, regional and international level, supervising, monitoring and coordination.
From last 27 years she has been involved in Women’s rights-based continuum of Quality Care, Human Rights, Gender, Women and Children Rights and SRHR issues. She also the Founder member and executive committee member of the organization of “Breaking the Silence” from 1993 to till now and actively involved with People’s Health movement (PHM) Bangladesh as a Co-Chairman. She has also experience in various researches on reproductive health right issues.
Saphon Somolireasmey (Ph.D)
(Program Manager, Youth Health and Advocacy Program, RHAC)
Somolireasmey is currently working as a program manager of Youth Health and Advocacy Program, Reproductive Health Association of Cambodia. Her major responsibilities are related to coordination and provision of platform for the effective implementation of the YHAP and advocacy for SRHR and build up youth focal points capacity of technical knowledge and skills on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in order to ensure that better support government counterparts at national and provincial level.
Despite of serving the communities through her works at RHAC, Reasmey is also a professor at the Royal University of Phnom Penh in majoring Philosophy. Base on her teaching experiences and doing researches on philosophical issues, she involves extensively in promoting gender equality through her consultative works with the state agencies and NGOs after obtaining her Ph.D in Gender and Diversity in Spain on “The self-invisibility of women in Modern Age: Perspective of Cambodian Society”.
Reasmey also has worked as a consultant on Gender and Climate Change to build up capacity in both government officials and beneficiaries in the targeted communities to understand about mainstreaming gender equality into daily lives and investment projects and ensure gender equality perspective into sectoral is included into action plans, strategic plans of institutional level.
Shanta Shrestha
(Chair, Beyond Beijing Committee (BBC), Nepal)
Ms Shanta Laxmi Shrestha is an educationist and has acquired MPhil Degree in Development Studies from School of Education, Kathmandu University in 2013. Over the past 30 years, she has worked at all levels both in the government and the non-government. She has worked as the first Women Development Officer of the government of Nepal in Kabhre District, then the Program Officer of the Women Development Section of the Ministry of Panchyat and Local Development at the national level.
She had served the Norwegian Safe the Children as the chief of the Training Section. Then she shifted to the Lutheran World Federation, where she had served Deputy Country Representative for 6 years and then moved to Eritrea -program as an expatriate staff to lead development program. From Eritrea program moved to Tanzania and worked as a Staff of DanChurchuAid to work in the EU funded “Local Community Competence Building Programme in Tanzania and Zambia”. Working abroad for seven years in the Horn of Africa – Eritrea, Tanzania and Zambia, went back to Nepal and took the lead in the ADB funded Technical Assistance for ” Capacity Building for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (CBGEEOW) program of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare.
Since, 2014, Shrestha is shouldering the responsibility of Chair- ship of the Beyond Beijing Committee -Nepal, the Women’s Human Rights organization established in 1995. She is the first female National Coordinator of Human Rights National Magna Meet (HRNMM 2015) and established an award ‘Shanta Laxmi Shrestha Women’s Human Rights’ to be awarded to a woman every year during Human Rights National Magna Meet (HRNMM) on 10th December “International Human Rights Day” to a women human rights activist. She is a member of the CSOs Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) Asia Coordination Committee and also a member of the Feminist Group. She is an executive member of the Asia Pacific Women Watch (APWW). She is the convener of women and girl’s constituency of Nepal SDGs Forum and Women Major Group for Sustainable Development in Nepal. She has built the capacities of thousands of women and men by facilitating in training.
Sivananthi Thanenthiran
Executive Director of ARROW
Before joining ARROW, she explored different career choices in her life, which included teaching at a university, running a magazine across three countries and working for the United Nations. These different opportunities helped her discover her passion for writing and learning and form her ideals of working in partnerships and respecting diversity. She has co-written and edited books on sustainable development and urbanization as part of her work with the Urban Governance Initiative (TUGI), a regional project of UNDP. She was also a committee member of the Women’s Candidacy Initiative (WCI), which ran candidates on a women’s rights issues platform.
Siva co-authored ARROW’s ICPD+15 and ICPD+20 Asia-Pacific monitoring reports and has written numerous articles and presented papers on women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights. She has been able to expand the work of ARROW to examine more closely the inter-linkages of sexual and reproductive health and rights with critical development issues such as poverty, food security, climate change and migration. Under Siva’s leadership, the organization’s working partnerships have expanded to 17 countries in the region as well as regional and global networks and organizations. She occasionally writes for local newspapers on issues that she thinks are of crucial importance in her country and views this as her contribution to the society in which she lives
Susana Chavez

Susana Chávez, Master in Public Health graduated from the Cayetano Heredia University. Obstetrician, graduated from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and specialist in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Public Policy, certified by The Institute for Health Policy and Social Science of the University of California, San Francisco.
Her expertise is focused on the development of public policies on sexual and reproductive health based on human rights and with a gender perspective. With extensive experience in conducting programs and projects related to sexual and reproductive health, gender and gender-based violence. She has led and participated in national projects within the framework of Bilateral Cooperation, at the level of government and international organizations, being in charge of preparing some National Plans or being included in Special Expert Commissions for policy formulation.
She has conducted various studies and research in the field of sexual and reproductive health and developed various publications and articles. She is currently Executive Secretary of the Latin American Consortium Against Unsafe Abortion – Clacai. She is a founding member of Promsex, President of the Steering Committee and currently Director General of that institution
